DISCUSSION ON UTILIZING FUNDING FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUNDS IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 932.7055 OF STATE OF FLORIDA STATUTES FOR PURPOSES OF LAUDERDALE LAKES TEEN SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM

Summary

This is a discussion on the use of Law Enforcement Trust Funds for the Lauderdale Lakes Teen Skills Training Program.

Staff Recommendation

Background:

The City of Lauderdale Lakes is requesting use of the Law Enforcement Trust Funds in accordance with the Florida State Statute Chapter 932 to be allocated to the Teen Skills program. The Parks and Human Services Department is proposing to offer a structured and well-supervised Teen Skills Training program for youth in the community. The focus will be on enriching the lives of the youth through interaction with Law Enforcement and other organizational partners while providing the teens with the opportunity to earn certificates for completing various courses and workshops.

The workshops will be offered for teens ages 15-19 that are in grades 9th – 12th. Eligible participants will include Lauderdale Lakes residents or students that attend local high schools. The goals are to create an environment of safety, character building, career preparedness, academic enrichment and fun. Funding for these activities will assist in reducing risky behavior amongst youth, keeping kids off the street, deterring youth from the criminal justice system while providing them with tools that will assist in career building. Police and Fire officers of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Lauderdale Lakes division will engage in these activities through open dialogue while exchanging ideas on making our community an even safer place to live.
